What is rainwater harvesting?
Rainwater harvesting is any system which collects rain for use when needed. This can consist of one barrel to water the landscape, or it can be a complex system of cisterns, pumps and filters which can produce all the necessary water for an entire household, including drinking water. You decide what fits your budget, household and landscaping needs.
Why is it better?
Rainwater is the preferred method of irrigation for many reasons: plants prefer untreated water; money is saved on your water bill; less water needs to pass through the Water Treatment Facility, which saves the city money; and treated water is not wasted on a landscape.
How much can I collect?
A lot! A roof of 1000 square feet will yield about 600 gallons during a one-inch rainfall. Many people find that one barrel is just a starting place for their water harvesting needs.
What can I use the water for?
You can water your plants, water your foundation, wash your car, bathe the dog or top off your pool. DO NOT DRINK IT.
Do I need a gutter?
No, it is not necessary. Simply find an area such as a valley where plenty of water pours off of your roof. Place the barrel so that most of the water enters the barrel. You may also use a rain chain to direct the water to the barrel. Remember, the barrel must be on a flat surface and will work better if it is elevated on blocks or a stand.
